Božana Dodig (age 70)

Božana is a distant cousin of my father. Through the conversation, it emerged that she had to go back to Drvar in the late 90s to save her old mother from the national extremist Croatian army by taking her to Belgrade. Her mother did not want to leave despite knowing she must because her house would be burned down, a final exterminated of all that was hers. Thinking on her feet she carried with her: an alarm clock, a coffee grinder, and a suit she planned to be buried in. Božana could not answer why her mother chose those items. Sadly, her mom passed a few years prior and Božana did not have any of those items nor pictures of them any longer. That gave me an opening to imagine how those items look and how she might have used them.
Objects that Božana’s mother took with her while fleeing: alarm clock, coffee grinder, suit.
