THE STORY
Amna (40)

Amna is the owner of a café in Rotterdam Zuid called ‘Lekker op Zuid’. Amna flew to the Netherlands from Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) when she was around 20 years old. From her experience assimilation in the Netherlands was hard. The thing that she carried with her and still does to this day is her grandma’s necklace. She said her grandmother taught her everything about love, and she carries her grandma around through that necklace. Amna struggled to talk about emigrating and things she left behind in Sarajevo. Several times, she almost started crying but would mask it by smiling and making jokes. I have been coffee there every Saturday since this winter. This has become its own ritual. What started as an interview resulted in friendship and getting to be a part of the Balkan community in Rotterdam.

Objects that are Amna’s favorite and that I associate with her: necklace, food.
